How to Rewire Your Brain for Business Success

Proof Changes People

About a week ago I posted a story of me jogging, talking about Snoop Dog.

And it got a TON of engagement.

Maybe because running in this sweltering Texas heat makes for a funny video, or maybe because we all love Snoop…

But maybe, just maybe, it’s because something about running reminds us how capable we are of incredible things.

Take the 4-minute mile:

Physiologists called it impossible, there was a rumor that just attempting it could kill you, and most runners were too afraid to even try.

So the world record had been stuck at 4:01.3 since 1945.

Elite runners trained their entire careers but kept coming back defeated, each one of them just a few agonizing milliseconds short.

The experts had reached a consensus: the human body just couldn’t do it.

Then on May 6, 1954, a 25-year-old medical student named Roger Bannister crossed the finish line at Oxford's Iffley Road track in 3 minutes, 59.4 seconds.

But that’s not the coolest part…

Only 46 days later, an Australian named John Landy ran a 3:57.9.

And within 3 years, 15 more runners had broken through the barrier.

The question you SHOULD be asking:

If that many people could do it, why did it take so long to break through the 4-minute barrier?

The runners training in 1953 trained just as hard as the runners in 1955.

Human bodies didn’t suddenly evolve to be a few seconds faster.

So what changed?

The only thing that mattered.

Belief.

I’ll say again for the people in the back: BELIEF!

Once people had seen Roger Bannister do it, they began to believe they could do it too.

And that was enough.

Suddenly all their doubts and limiting beliefs didn’t matter.

Because seeing someone else do the “impossible rewires your brain.

It’s one of the most underrated levers in human performance, and I don’t think people talk about it enough.

The Bannister Effect

We call it the Bannister Effect.

It's the moment when a concept you've been treating as a fantasy becomes a roadmap.

Not because you read another book or listened to another podcast.

But because you saw a real human being, with real constraints, in a real situation not that different from yours, do the thing.

And the closer that person’s situation mirrors yours, the harder it hits.

The Bannister effect is why I spend so much time collecting stories from the Academy and the Boardroom.

Seeing people who become owners and grow their businesses should encourage you to BELIEVE you can too.

Because it’s not enough to know people like Steve Jobs and Elon Musk have built huge companies.

You’re so far removed from a billionaire, they may as well be fictional characters.

And the dirty little secret about the Bannister Effect is for it to work, you need to see someone LIKE YOU succeed.

The Big Shift

Rachel showed up to Main Street Millionaire LIVE post-layoff, after 30 years in corporate with a healthy amount of doubt that any of this “business buying” stuff was real.

She looked around the room, shocked by what she saw…

Not big-shots or flashy “businessmen” in expensive suits, but people just like her.

Mid-career pivots, military spouses, ex-finance professionals, and otherwise “normal” people who wanted to learn how to buy a small business.

More importantly, she saw people who had already bought a business.

"I realized there's a whole hell of a lot of people out there that are just like me," she said. "And also a whole hell of a lot of businesses out there looking for owners."

That's the Bannister Effect.

In an afternoon, the thing she'd been treating as a maybe became a sure-thing.

Fast-forward about a year, and she closed on a senior move management company 7 miles from her house.

The same thing happened for Erika and Kevin.

As a military family with no acquisition background, they joined the Contrarian Academy in May 2025.

What they found wasn't just training materials and deal frameworks.

(Although there’s plenty of that 😉)

It was a community of people mid-search, asking the same questions, working through the same fears, and closing real deals.

Every person who posted a win in the Slack was proof, and every deal evaluation someone shared was another drop in the proof bucket.

"Every single time we knew a little bit more, and went in with greater confidence," Erika told us.

So it was no surprise when they closed on a profitable appliance store in March of this year.

Stop Right There!

If you've been sitting on the idea of buying a business but still aren't fully convinced you can do it, we’re going LIVE in one week to put you in a room full of proof.

Main Street Millionaire Live is our 3-day, virtual bootcamp where we walk you through exactly how to find, evaluate, finance, and close on a small business.

And on June 18th, you can see it for yourself.

When you attend Main Street Millionaire, you’ll walk away with:

  • The EXACT pricing and financing terms for your perfect fit business
  • Holding Company structuring template so you can start sketching out your future empire
  • An M&A negotiation playbook
  • The top questions you NEED to ask sellers to get the best deal
  • A Business Buying Dictionary
  • An entire workbook you’ll fill out over the event so you have a personalized deal playbook

And this is the last time we’re hosting a business buying event in 2026, so if you miss this one, you’ll have to wait a whole year for your next chance.

In a year you could be the proud owner of a cash flowing business, or you could be right where you are right now.

So if you’re happy with where you are, cool.

But if you’re not?

This could change your life

Breaking Through Limiting Beliefs

Okay, one more example.

Randol.

He runs a company with good values and a genuine commitment to doing things right.

But he'd hit a ceiling.

He knew he was missing something, he just couldn't see what it was yet.

"I didn't know what I didn't know. And that's not a good place to be."

So he joined the Growth Boardroom and walked into a room of operators who had been exactly where he was.

Electrical contractors, dog service owners, and healthcare providers. People buying and scaling businesses past the ceiling he was bumping up against

And what finally helped him bust through wasn’t one single tactic or trick…

It was watching people just like him break through first.

People like Shon, Bethany, and Matt

"Greatness requires more than good values. It requires surrounding yourself with the right people and intentionality. A real blueprint. That's been my biggest revelation."

That ceiling didn't suddenly disappear.

His belief got strong enough to break through.

That's the Bannister Effect.

And if you want to experience that effect LIVE, click here to get a taste.

Your Proof Stack Self-Audit

So, where is your proof gap?

Run through this real quick to find out:

1. Have you seen a real person, someone you could actually have a conversation with, do the thing you want to do? If no: your imagination is working against you. Find the room, talk to the person.

People who lived during Roger Bannister’s time, couldn’t just shoot people an email. You can.

Take advantage.

2. When you picture yourself doing it, does it feel like a fantasy or a possibility? Fantasy = proof deficit. Find more proof. Possibility = your Proof Stack is building. Keep going.

Keep visualizing yourself succeeding. The stronger your belief becomes, the easier it is to take action.

Remember this formula: Belief → Action → Confidence.

Eventually, all your efforts become evidence. At that point, you can be your own proof.

3. What's the last piece of evidence you added to your Proof Stack? If you don’t know, you've been collecting information when you needed to be collecting proof.

This is the difference between theory and proof.

There’s a time and place for thinking lofty thoughts and learning about concepts. But at some point the rubber has to meet the road.

It’s easier to point at someone running a 4-minute mile and say, “He did it, so I can too.” than reading about string theory and building a light-speed spacecraft.

TLDR:

Roger Bannister didn't give the 15 runners who broke the 4-minute barrier after him a secret training method.

Hell, he didn’t even meet most of them.

He just proved it was possible to run a little faster, and that was enough to change everything.

You're not stuck because you haven’t read the right books.

You're stuck because you haven't been in the right rooms and seen what’s possible first-hand.

That's what we're building at Main Street Millionaire Live, the Contrarian Academy, and The Boardroom.

Not just a curriculum, but a community full of real, tangible proof.

Because when ordinary people finally see someone do the thing they want to do…

They stop asking "Is this really possible?"

And start asking "How do I do it?"

See you on Main Street.
